Type 1 diabetes patients benefit from new books

Type 1 diabetes is a serious, lifelong autoimmune condition where the body cannot make insulin. Insulin plays a vital role in allowing the glucose in our blood to enter our cells and fuel our body and, without it, glucose levels can build up in the bloodstream and lead to serious complications.

Educating patients, especially those newly-diagnosed, on how the foods they eat can impact their condition is an important part of helping people to self-manage their diabetes.

NHS Grampian’s Diabetes team reached out to us about an educational book which can be used during appointments to help teach patients about things like counting carbohydrates and reading food labels, and can also be a valuable resource for the patient to take home.

Thanks to your generous donations, we were able to purchase enough books to help 72 patients better manage their Type 1 diabetes.

One of those patients told us: “Heading to 60, a diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes was the last thing on my mind and, never having counted carbs, I found the thought very daunting.

“The diagnosis is life-changing and the Carbs & Cals book has been an invaluable resource in managing my carbohydrate intake. This book has become an essential tool for me, it is a very practical guide for managing my diabetes.”

Your donations have made this happen, and we are incredibly grateful for your support.
