Ward 6 at Dr Gray’s Hospital has recently refurbished its day room, and it’s already making a big difference to those who use it. Thanks to a generous £4,000 contribution from the Rotary Club of Elgin, along with a grant of nearly £11,000 from NHS Grampian Charity, the space has been completely transformed into a warm and peaceful spot.
Marian Evans, current President of the Rotary Club of Elgin, described the space as “a little sanctuary” and said it felt great to know their donation was helping create such a positive atmosphere for everyone on the ward.
The changes are noticeable the moment you walk in — softer colours on the walls, fresh flooring, comfy chairs, updated blinds, and a new TV all help make the room feel more like home than a hospital.
“It’s quickly become a favourite place for patients to unwind, chat with visitors, take part in light activities, or just enjoy a moment of quiet,” said Heidi Christison, acting senior charge nurse for Ward 6.
“Staff have been using the room too,” she said. “A peaceful corner for a quick breather during a busy shift can go a long way.”
Behind the scenes, it took a lot of teamwork to bring the idea to life. The NHS Grampian Charity helped turn the vision into reality, while Nicola Cruickshank, the ward’s admin support, took care of the details like ordering and arranging delivery of the new furniture.
Lisa Duthie, NHS Grampian Charity, Lead summed it up well: “Creating comfortable spaces within hospitals is so important to ensure it is not just the physical wellbeing of patients which is being looked after, it’s their mental wellbeing too.
“We are so grateful to all our supporters whose generous donations have created this peaceful sanctuary within Dr Gray’s Hospital, and it is wonderful to see how much of a positive impact it is already having.”
The day room is a great example of what can happen when community groups, hospital staff and charities pull together — small changes add up to something meaningful for everyone involved.
